It is really hard for me not to get excited about our downtown. Of course it's my job to get up every morning thinking about our downtown, but it's much more than that. Every day I drive down Highland Avenue and see the daily improvements taking place. Every day I drive the eight block area known as Central Business District and see store owners opening their shops, professionals carrying coffee cups and brief cases to their offices. I see trash being picked up daily, planters full of flowers being watered, city workers taking care of trees, flower beds and plantings. It is so relaxing, so tranquil to see the downtown waking up.
By noon, the hustle and bustle of the lunch hour is great as the sidewalks become full of pedestrians stopping to talk to each other and meet for lunch. Did you know that there are over 5,000 workers in the downtown area on any given work day? We really do have a strong economic engine working for us.
As I leave at the end of the day, it's much quieter again. People have enjoyed what the downtown has to offer, a safe, friendly workplace, attractions to visit, and unique shopping. What more can we ask for, for now. We are setting the stage, rebuilding a former spiritless part of our city, pumping money into an area that is vital to the City as a whole. Yes we need a night life, and yes we will eventually get it, but for right now we are building our future. Aren't you glad you're a part of it? I sure am.
