From Your Director . . .

There is a very special event happening on Friday the 22nd at The Carnegie Center-Arts & History, 305 East College Street.

In 1999, Dr. David Dockery and Lee Benson of Union University along with Mayor Charles Farmer had a vision. They created the Jackson Union Sculpture Tour (JUST). The first venture of what started as a tribute to the tornado of January 1999, a seven column - free falling water, multiple stone sphere sculptures known as "Beth-El" located in Utility Park across from the Civic Center was designed and created.

A five year juried sculpture tour was created bringing national sculptors to downtown Jackson. The City would purchase one of the works each year, and install it as public art. We would also be able to enjoy twenty-five rotating art pieces thorough out the same five year period. The first competition took place in 2003-2004 so the city now owns the pieces at Lafayette and Highland, the Civic Center, and the Carnegie Center for Arts and History.

This years 2006-2007 competition will be celebrated with a reception at The Carnegie at 7:00 pm on Friday the 22nd. This is a major highlight for the downtown and all of Jackson. Installation of this year's pieces will be completed by the 22nd and the current winner will be announced. Please don't miss this opportunity to further support the Arts in Jackson. You will have a chance to meet the artists and the JUST members, so please mark your calendars and plan on attending. You will be glad you took advantage of this unique opportunity.
