From Your Director . . .

We have been attempting to focus a lot of our marketing efforts on the intimacy and charm and the public spaces of downtown. A small, intimate downtown can be a highly valued commodity for miles around, even in a big-city trade area such as ours. Besides the small town feel, compared to Memphis and Nashville, the downtown has a significant competitive advantage in the level of activity in our public spaces. There isn't a week-end that there are not several options of things to do downtown, and a lot of week nights, too.

Downtown is where big event ideas can grow. In order to incubate events you need an informative town atmosphere, good venues of which we enjoy, a stage with a good sound system, and talent.

The Bluesfest is an event put on by JDDC, but most of the downtown events are run by not-for-profit groups. There are a lot of downtown events with the Ned McWherter West Tennessee Cultural Arts Center, Carl Perkins Civic Center, and Fairgrounds Park, not to mention the Aeneas Building, Roberg Lofts, New Southern Hotel and the downtown galleries. There is something about the nature of an event; it's like a canvas that people paint on, creating their own vision and outcomes.

Take time to keep up with the special events taking place downtown. Downtown is so distinctly appealing, lively, and workably urban yet small-town in character, it's a special experience. Spread the word and come downtown soon.

New Bakery Opens

Don't forget to stop by The Family Bakers at 210 East Main Street. They have been open a week now, and the response has been good. They have three display cases just chocked full of homemade baked goodies. One of the cases even has sugar-free pastries, made with splenda.

They feature a daily luncheon and breakfast special. We need to support the newest downtown business, so stop down and meet "the girls". You'll be glad you did. For more information you can call 424.7582.

It's "THAT TIME" Again . . .
