From Your Director . . .

What should really make downtown Jackson important to you?

Downtown is an area that needs to be protected for investment reasons. Existing buildings, banks, businesses, and commercial properties represent investment that have already been made in the central business district. City investment is in the form of sewers, sidewalks, landscaping, streets, and water lines. It is the obligation of the city and private citizens to protect the downtown and to see that the tax base remains strong.

Downtown is an incubator for new businesses. Starting and overhead costs are often too high in shopping centers and perimeter office buildings for the new businesses. Downtown, where the overhead is lower, is the logical place for beginning and smaller businesses. It is up to downtown merchants and officials to see that the area remains a viable business district that will afford opportunities for new growth.

The rehabilitation of Downtown Jackson attracts community-wide investment. When industry leaders look at Jackson as a possible location, the officials examine many aspects, such as the availability of industrial parks, adequate airport facilities, land, water, and utilities. They inquire about the tax rate, prevailing wage, school, system, available housing, and quality of life. Included in the quality of life is interest in downtown. Is it alive and viable, or does it represent local disinterest and failure? Studies have shown that quality of life is a priority concern of those seeking relocation.

Downtown is a symbol of civic pride or lack of it, If Jackson is proud of its downtown it will reflect throughout the entire city. We are lucky we have such a viable, prosperous and stable downtown. You should be proud.
