Community development and economic development are often difficult to define and are sometimes seen only in the eyes of the beholder. They are two very different things, but there is a strong relationship between the two.
Economic development is creating new jobs through recruiting new firms, the retention and expansion of existing businesses, and the facilitation of new business start-ups. A holistic definition of economic development would include raising the standard of living and quality of life of all residents through higher skilled and income jobs in order to diversify the local economy in a positive manner.
Community development is much broader and includes both an outcome and a process. The outcome of community development includes improved physical infrastructure, better health, lower crime rates, improved education and many other accomplishments, all of which facilitate economic development. Community development occurs when residents address problems, plan and act in a unified fashion to improve the community. The ability of a community to successfully undertake community development is called social capacity.
Successful communities constantly work to improve their social capacity; a process often referred to as capacity building. Capacity building leads to success in the outcomes of community development such as better infrastructure, improved social conditions and success in economic development. If a location is not successful in community development, working together planning, prioritizing, etc, then it will be much more difficult to achieve success in economic development. Community development creates better communities that will attract and grow businesses. Without a good "product" to sell it is hard to be successful in economic development.
How are we doing with our community and economic development efforts?
