Issue 250 - February 24, 2010
Last night I had the privilege of listening to legendary NFL coach Don Shula at the 18th Annual Eagle Club Dinner in the Carl Perkins Civic Center. I like football, but I never knew much about the Miami Dolphins except they had Don Shula and Dan Marino. Before Coach took the stage, I thought “This is amazing, Coach Shula in Jackson, TN”! Then I started thinking of some of the famous guests that have been in Jackson in the last 6 months or so (yes, I am stepping out of downtown for a moment). Here are the ones I could think of right off the top of my head; Wink Martindale, TV personality, Mike Huckabee, former Arkansas Governor, EROICA Ensemble, Dee Daniels, international performer, Bob Moses, civil-rights legend, and this weekend alone, Jackson, TN is hosting Lonestar and Janie Fricke at the Blue Suede Spectacular and The Fisk Jubilee Singers at the 9th Annual Jewel Awards. Looking down the road a bit, Tim Tebow, former Florida quarterback will be at Union University and Peng Peng, international pianist, will perform with The Jackson Youth Symphony Orchestra.
What an impressive list and I know there are many more! This is yet another reason to be proud of Jackson. Most communities our size do not have the capability, for whatever reasons, to host such a talented group of visitors.
Coach Shula believes that having a “Vision of Perfection” was a key component of his success. He talked about always striving to have that perfect meeting, that lead to the perfect practice, that lead to the perfect season, complete with a Super Bowl win. He is the only coach in NFL history to have that perfect season. He believes one thing Dan Marino had was always striving to have that perfect pass. His point was, if you don’t have that “Vision of Perfection”, then how will you get to perfection? You have to work hard and always keep that vision in front of you.
Shula’s speech got me to thinking about Downtown Jackson, TN, what is our “Vision of Perfection”? I know what my vision looks like, but since this is not my downtown, it is ours. Let me know what your “Vision of Perfection” is for downtown, by answering the question of the week
